Tart Cherry Capsules
With many tart cherry capsules on the market, you may be wondering which is the best? Before I tell you my thoughts, first, a little background on why tart cherry.
Why Tart Cherry?
Cherry treats gout flare-ups by reducing the level of uric acid in the body.
A 2011 study noted that 100 percent tart cherry juice significantly reduced the level of uric acid levels in participants who drank 8 ounces of the juice every day for four weeks.
It is not only cherry juice that could lower uric acid levels — cherry juice concentrate can also be beneficial for those with gout. This is why tart cherry capsules could be so beneficial. They contain highly concentrated amounts of tart cherry in them.
A 2012 pilot study found that consuming cherry juice concentrate lowered the levels of uric acid in the body. One portion of the study demonstrated that cherry extract was more effective than pomegranate concentrate at lowering uric acid levels.
An online survey directed at people with gout also suggested cherry intake can improve symptoms. Of the survey respondents, 43 percent said that they used cherry extract or juice to treat their gout symptoms. The survey found that those who used cherry supplements reported significantly fewer flare-ups. Of course, this study is limited because it relies on the subjects to report their own symptoms.
One of the most comprehensive studies on gout and cherry juice was conducted in 2012. The study looked at 633 participants with gout. The researchers found that consuming at least 10 cherries per day reduced the risk of gout attacks by 35 percent.
According to the study, cherries reduce uric acid because they contain anthocyanins which is what gives cherries their color. Anthocyanins are also found in other fruits, such as blueberries, but there’s a lack of conclusive research on the effects of blueberry consumption on gout.
Anthocyanins also have anti-inflammatory properties, which makes cherry juice a natural anti-inflammatory. This may help ease the swelling associated with gout.
I personally take tart cherry capsules, and as a result, have tried many different brands. By no means have I tried them all, but there are a few I like.
These tart cherry capsules make a noticeable difference for me (my own opinion). My gout flare ups seem to cycle less when using. In these times, I usually take the high end of the recommended dosage, which I do not suggest trying yourself. However, even in the remission cycle, I find my gout flare ups happen less frequently. The best part is, these tart cherry capsules never upset my stomach or make me burp like some supplements do. I’ll leave the science to the product descriptions, but from a real world usage point of view, I give this 5/5 stars and it is the primary gout prevention capsule I use.
